Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the last General election, Peter Obi has urged African leaders to embrace the concept of global citizen by promoting inclusivity, tolerance, and collaboration, stressing the importance of caring and taking action that would impact positively the lives of the people and ultimately change the world.
Obi stated this during a lecture he delivered at Cambridge University, entitled “African Leadership’s Role in Fostering Global Citizenship and Social Responsibility,” organised by Obedient Movement, United Kingdom, in collaboration with Cambridge University Nigerian Society, (CUNS) and Anglia Ruskin University Nigerian Students Association (ARUNSA), UK.
The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 election defined global citizenship as an actionable concept that acknowledges shared humanity, transcending geographical, cultural, and ideological divides.
“Global citizenship is an actionable concept that acknowledges shared humanity, transcending geographical, cultural, and ideological divides. A leader must first be a global citizen. Are leaders in Africa global citizens?
“Do they believe that their actions affect the lives of citizens all around the world? A leader must have some sense of social responsibility to know how his action will affect the lives of others.
“When a leader understands that, he will look at issues from the global perspectives. This is because the same thing you need to develop your local area will be the same developmental index other leaders need to develop theirs.”
Obi emphasized the critical role of leaders at this historical crossroads in shaping Africa’s destiny and making substantial contributions to worldwide advancement, adding that leadership extends beyond national interests to global responsibilities.
He stressed the need for investing in education, healthcare, and infrastructure as key to sustainable development and societal advancement, adding that by equipping citizens with the necessary resources, leaders can fulfil their responsibilities and aid in creating a more just and prosperous global community.
He charged Nigerian students both at home and in abroad to remain hopeful and committed to Nigeria’s progress, advocating for the adoption of international best practices to ensure the nation’s success.
President, Angina Ruskin University Nigerian Students Association, Committee Chair, Nigerian Students Societies Presidents’ Forum (NSSPF), Andrew Oyedola, who gave the vote of thanks, said the ideas and leadership traits Obi imparted in him had been of immense value in several areas of management, adding that the students had benefited tremendously from the lecture and wealth of experience of Obi.
