In 1 Samuel 24:1-2, we read about King Saul’s relentless pursuit of David, whom he perceived as a threat to his throne. The passage states, “Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to look for David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats” (1 Samuel 24:2). What’s striking about this story is that Saul’s expensive pursuit of David was not driven by a desire to protect the nation, but rather to satisfy his own personal vendetta, using the nation’s resources (army).
The Dangers of Self-Serving Leadership
When leaders prioritize their own interests over the welfare of their people, it can have devastating consequences. Instead of channeling their time, talent, and strength towards championing the welfare of the people they represent, they waste their resources on perceived enemies. This not only neglects the needs of the people but also distracts from the problems and purposes that God has called them to address.

The Implications
When leaders focus on personal agendas, they risk neglecting their duties and responsibilities. The problems that need to be addressed will still be there, but the leader’s strength and resources will be wasted on irrelevant issues. This can lead to stagnation and a lack of progress, ultimately hindering growth and effectiveness.
Counter-Productive for the Leader’s Growth
In fact, prioritizing personal vendettas can be counter-productive for the leader’s growth. By focusing on perceived enemies, leaders can become mired in negativity and distraction, losing sight of their purpose and calling. As leaders, it is essential to recognise the importance of prioritising the welfare of the people and staying focused on the problems and purposes that God has called them to address.

A Call to Action
We need to learn from the story of Saul, and strive to be leaders who prioritize the welfare of our people. By doing so, we can stay focused on our purpose and calling, and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.
